“Tamirhane”; Rethinking the Police Station as a Public Space, which was executed under the process design and facilitation of Roof Coliving, in which Gizem Cebeci and Zeynep Aybüke Mutlu, graduates of our department, and Emre Güzel, one of our Urban Design Master's Program students are among the team members, and in cooperation with Nilüfer Municipality and Nilüfer City Council, aimed to create the culture of repair in the fight against the climate crisis through spaces, to disseminate it in the city, and to implement spatial practices with citizen participation.
“Tamirhane” is a participatory re-functional work to transform the Nilüfer Municipality Police Station building, which has an area of 550 square meters, to popularize the repair culture and to carry out upcycling works in the space. A design process focusing on participatory design practices took place around the question 'How can we create a civil, flexible, and creative space with a culture of repair?' A co-creation process was carried out in which Nilüfer residents had a say in the transformation of the space.
The Police Station building and its surroundings in Nilüfer, Bursa; was re-functioned with the meaningful participation of citizens, city council volunteers, professional organizations, non-governmental organizations, academics, tradesmen, high school, and university students. “Tamirhane” continues its existence as a spatial transformation project adapted for the people of Nilüfer with the participation of the people of Nilüfer.
The participatory and creative re-functioning process carried out within Roof Coliving made it to the finals in the cooperation category of the İbrahim Bodur Social Entrepreneurship Awards and was among the good examples selected for the Creative Bureaucracy Festival, which is held every year with the support of the German Government. The project also won the incentive award in the 2023 Raci Bademli Good Practices Award Competition, which is held every two years in memory of Prof. Dr. Raci Bademli by the UCTEA Chamber of City Planners.
