TEDU CITY Faculty Members Presented Their Research at the AMPS "Madrid – A Focus on Pedagogy 2026" Conference

TED University Department of City and Regional Planning faculty members Dr. Lecturer Irmak Yavuz Özgür, Research Assistant Başak Aycan Özkan, and Research Assistant Elif Merve Nalçakar participated in the AMPS "Madrid – A Focus on Pedagogy 2026" Conference, held at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain, between 24 and 26 June 2026.

The TEDU CITY team presented their paper entitled "Imagining and Designing Otherwise: Ecological Thinking as Spatial Design Pedagogy," which explored the role of ecological thinking in fostering imagination, creativity, and agency in introductory spatial design education.

Drawing on more than a decade of experience in the Basic Design in Planning Studio at TED University, the paper introduced a pedagogical framework structured around three complementary strategies: alternativeness, encouraging speculative and counterfactual thinking; circularity, emphasizing cycles, temporal layering, and systemic relationships; and adaptability, responding to uncertainty and complexity in the design process. Building on these principles, the study proposed a typological framework consisting of form-based, activity-based, and mobility-based design schemes, demonstrating how ecological thinking can support spatial innovation and critical thinking among planning and design students.
